Artist Sherrill Roland presents his project proposal, The Jumpsuit Project. After being incarcerated for three years and then exonerated, Roland wears an orange jumpsuit to class at UNC-Greensboro every day and invites campus community to share their own experiences with incarceration.
He was chosen as the winner of PICNIC and was awarded $750 to jump-start his project.
“I wear the jumpsuit so we can deal with whatever prejudices we may have about inmates,” Roland said. “Speaking with the campus police is a daily thing for me because it’s not necessarily about what I do in the suit. It’s what people think I am in the suit.”
